Blood Orange - Coastal Grooves
Domino | August 2011
Domino’s latest debut is Blood Orange, the eccentric stylings of New Yorker Devonté Hynes. Coastal Grooves puts the R&B in chillwave sort of like a frantic Twin Shadow but is rather unsuccessful as the record comes off as detached and meddled without much passion or care. Hynes has previous worked under projects like the spazzed-out Test Icicles and the experimental folk-pop Lightspeed Champion. Under his latest guise, the tracks do have those big chunky grooves the titles promised, but there is hardly any depth to any of them.
